Rashi vs Lagna vs Sun Sign: Which Zodiac Sign Should You Follow?
Moon sign, ascendant or Sun sign — which is your real sign in Vedic astrology? The difference, why it differs from your Western sign, and which to use.

Quick answer
In Vedic astrology your Rashi (Moon sign) and Lagna (ascendant) matter more than your Sun sign. Use the Rashi for daily horoscopes, Sade Sati and matching, and the Lagna for reading the whole birth chart. Your Vedic signs are calculated on the sidereal zodiac, which is about 24° behind the Western one, so they often differ.
Key takeaways
- Rashi = sign of the Moon (mind, emotions); Lagna = sign rising in the east (body, life path); Sun sign = sign of the Sun (soul, ego).
- Indian horoscopes, Sade Sati and Kundli matching use the Rashi.
- The Lagna sets up all 12 houses, so it is the base of a full chart reading.
- The Moon changes sign every ~2¼ days and the Lagna every ~2 hours, so you need an exact birth time.
- Because of the ~24° ayanamsha, about 4 in 5 people have a Vedic Sun sign one sign earlier than their Western sign.

What is the difference between Rashi, Lagna and Sun sign?
Your Kundli contains all twelve zodiac signs, but three of them are personally “yours”:
| Term | What it is | Represents | Changes every |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rashi (Moon sign) | Sign the Moon was in at birth | Mind, emotions, habits, mother | ~2¼ days |
| Lagna (Ascendant) | Sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth | Body, personality, overall life path | ~2 hours |
| Sun sign | Sign the Sun was in at birth | Soul, ego, vitality, father | ~30 days |
When someone in India asks “Aapki rashi kya hai?” they mean your Moon sign. When an astrologer reads your Kundli, they begin from your Lagna.
Which sign should you follow — Rashi or Lagna?
Use both, for different purposes:
- Rashi (Moon sign) for daily/weekly horoscopes, Shani Sade Sati and Dhaiya, Kundli matching (Ashtakoota is based on the Moon), and naming traditions (the first syllable of a baby’s name often comes from the Moon’s nakshatra).
- Lagna (ascendant) for reading the full chart — career (10th house), marriage (7th), wealth (2nd and 11th) — because the Lagna decides which sign falls in each house.
Many astrologers also read a Chandra Lagna chart — the birth chart redrawn with the Moon sign as the 1st house — and compare it with the main Lagna chart. Results that show up in both are considered strong.
Why is my Vedic sign different from my Western zodiac sign?
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, fixed to the seasons (Aries always starts at the spring equinox). Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, fixed to the actual stars.
Because the Earth’s axis slowly wobbles (precession), the two zodiacs drift apart by about 1° every 72 years. The gap is called the ayanamsha. Using the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsha — the official standard in India — it is about 24° today.
So the sidereal Sun enters each sign roughly 24 days later than the Western dates. For example:
| Western Sun sign dates | Vedic (sidereal) Sun sign dates (approx.) |
|---|---|
| Aries: 21 Mar – 19 Apr | Mesha: 14 Apr – 14 May |
| Leo: 23 Jul – 22 Aug | Simha: 17 Aug – 16 Sep |
| Capricorn: 22 Dec – 19 Jan | Makara: 14 Jan – 12 Feb |
That is why Makar Sankranti falls around 14 January — the day the Sun enters sidereal Capricorn. If you were born in the first three weeks or so of a Western sign, your Vedic Sun sign is usually the previous sign.
How do I find my Rashi and Lagna?
You need three details: date, exact time and place of birth. The Moon moves about 13° a day, so near a sign boundary a few hours change your Rashi. The Lagna moves through all 12 signs in a day, so even a 15-minute error can shift it when you are born near the edge of a sign.
Enter your birth details in Agastya and it calculates your Rashi, Lagna, Nakshatra and Sun sign using real astronomical positions with the Lahiri ayanamsha. You can then ask, for example, “What does my Meena Lagna say about my career?” in Hindi or English.
What does each Lagna say about personality?
A very short guide to the 12 ascendants:
- Mesha (Aries): quick, bold, a natural starter.
- Vrishabha (Taurus): steady, patient, loves comfort and beauty.
- Mithuna (Gemini): curious, talkative, versatile.
- Karka (Cancer): caring, emotional, attached to home.
- Simha (Leo): confident, generous, wants respect.
- Kanya (Virgo): analytical, practical, detail-oriented.
- Tula (Libra): balanced, diplomatic, relationship-focused.
- Vrishchika (Scorpio): intense, private, determined.
- Dhanu (Sagittarius): optimistic, principled, loves learning.
- Makara (Capricorn): disciplined, ambitious, patient.
- Kumbha (Aquarius): independent, idealistic, humanitarian.
- Meena (Pisces): compassionate, intuitive, spiritual.
Planets in the 1st house and the strength of the Lagna lord modify these traits a lot — read how to read your Kundli for the next step.
Frequently asked questions
Is Rashi the same as Moon sign?
Yes. In Vedic astrology, Rashi usually refers to your Janma Rashi — the zodiac sign the Moon was in at the time of your birth. It is the sign used for Indian horoscopes, Sade Sati and Kundli matching.
Which is more important: Lagna or Moon sign?
Both are important. The Lagna is the base of the full birth chart and describes your body and life path, while the Moon sign describes your mind and is used for horoscopes, transits like Sade Sati and marriage matching.
Why is my zodiac sign different in Indian astrology?
Indian (Vedic) astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is about 24° behind the tropical zodiac used in Western astrology. So the Sun enters each Vedic sign about 24 days later, and most people’s Vedic Sun sign is one sign earlier.
Can I know my Lagna without birth time?
No. The Lagna changes roughly every two hours, so it cannot be known without a reasonably exact birth time. Without it, astrologers often use the Moon sign (Chandra Lagna) as the reference instead.
