What Is a Kundli? How to Read Your Vedic Birth Chart (Beginner’s Guide)
Learn what a Kundli (Janam Kundali) is, what the 12 houses and 9 grahas mean, and how to read your Vedic birth chart step by step — explained simply.

Quick answer
A Kundli (Janam Kundali) is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place you were born. It places the 9 grahas (planets) in 12 houses and 12 rashis (signs). To read it, start with the Lagna (ascendant), then see which signs and planets fall in each house, and finally check your current Mahadasha.
Key takeaways
- A Kundli needs three inputs: date of birth, exact time of birth and place of birth.
- The Lagna (ascendant) is the 1st house and the starting point of every reading.
- Each of the 12 houses rules one area of life — career is the 10th, marriage the 7th.
- Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, so your Vedic sign often differs from your Western sun sign.
- The Mahadasha running now tells you which planet’s results are most active in your life.

What is a Kundli?
A Kundli (also called Janam Kundali, Janampatri or birth chart) is a diagram of where the Sun, Moon and planets were in the sky at the exact minute you were born, as seen from your place of birth. Vedic astrology (Jyotish) uses this snapshot to describe your nature, strengths, challenges and the timing of important events.
Every Kundli is built from three pieces of information:
- Date of birth — decides where the slow-moving planets (Saturn, Jupiter, Rahu, Ketu) were.
- Time of birth — decides your Lagna (ascendant), which changes roughly every 2 hours, and your Moon’s exact position.
- Place of birth — decides the local time zone, latitude and longitude, which shift the Lagna and the houses.
Two people born on the same day in the same city but a few hours apart can have very different Kundlis. That is why an accurate birth time matters so much.
What are the main parts of a Kundli?
A Kundli has four building blocks. Once you know them, any chart becomes readable.
The 12 rashis (signs)
The zodiac is divided into 12 signs of 30° each: Mesha (Aries), Vrishabha (Taurus), Mithuna (Gemini), Karka (Cancer), Simha (Leo), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Vrishchika (Scorpio), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Makara (Capricorn), Kumbha (Aquarius) and Meena (Pisces). A sign describes how a planet expresses itself.
The 9 grahas (planets)
Vedic astrology uses nine grahas: Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Mangal (Mars), Budh (Mercury), Guru (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), and the two lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu. A graha describes what energy is acting — Mars is drive and courage, Venus is love and comfort, Saturn is discipline and delay.
The 12 bhavas (houses)
Houses describe where in life that energy shows up. The house containing your Lagna is the 1st house, and the rest follow in order.
| House | Main areas of life |
|---|---|
| 1st (Lagna) | Self, body, personality, overall direction |
| 2nd | Family, speech, savings, food |
| 3rd | Courage, siblings, communication, short travel |
| 4th | Mother, home, property, vehicles, inner peace |
| 5th | Children, education, intelligence, romance |
| 6th | Enemies, debts, disease, daily work, competition |
| 7th | Marriage, spouse, business partners |
| 8th | Longevity, sudden events, secrets, inheritance |
| 9th | Luck, father, dharma, higher learning, long travel |
| 10th | Career, status, karma, reputation |
| 11th | Income, gains, friends, fulfilment of wishes |
| 12th | Expenses, losses, foreign lands, spirituality, sleep |
The 27 nakshatras
Each sign is further divided into lunar mansions called nakshatras — 27 in total, each spanning 13°20′. The nakshatra of your Moon (your Janma Nakshatra) is one of the most important details in a Vedic chart because it decides your Vimshottari Mahadasha sequence.
How do you read a Kundli step by step?
You don’t need to memorise everything at once. Follow this order:
- Find your Lagna. In the North Indian (diamond) chart, the top-centre diamond is always the 1st house; the number written there is the sign of your Lagna. In the South Indian (square) chart, signs are fixed and the Lagna is marked separately.
- Note your Moon sign (Rashi). This is the sign the Moon occupies. Indian horoscopes, Sade Sati and daily predictions are usually based on it.
- Look at the Lagna lord. The planet that rules your Lagna sign shows how strong your overall direction is. A Lagna lord in a good house (1, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10) and in a friendly or own sign is a positive sign.
- Check planets house by house. For each planet, ask: which house is it in (area of life), which sign (how it behaves), and is it exalted, debilitated, in its own sign or retrograde?
- Read the key houses for your question. For career read the 10th house and its lord; for marriage the 7th; for money the 2nd and 11th.
- Check your current Mahadasha and Antardasha. A great promise in the chart gives results mainly during the dasha of the planets involved. This is the timing layer of a reading.
What is the difference between Lagna, Rashi and Sun sign?
- Lagna (ascendant) — the sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth. It describes your body, personality and the whole house structure. It needs an exact birth time.
- Rashi (Moon sign) — the sign the Moon was in. It describes your mind and emotions, and most Indian predictions use it.
- Sun sign — the sign the Sun was in. Western astrology focuses on this; in Vedic astrology it is just one of nine planets.
Because Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac (corrected by the Lahiri ayanamsha, about 24° today), your Vedic Sun sign is often one sign behind your Western one. Read more in our guide to Rashi vs Lagna vs Sun sign.
What is the difference between the North and South Indian chart?
Both show exactly the same information in a different layout. The North Indian chart is a diamond where houses are fixed and the sign numbers move. The South Indian chart is a square grid where signs are fixed (Pisces is always top-left) and the houses move. Use whichever you find easier — the reading does not change.
Which other charts are used besides the birth chart?
The main birth chart is called the D1 or Rashi chart. Astrologers also use divisional charts (vargas). The most important is the D9 Navamsa, used for marriage and to judge the true strength of each planet. The D10 Dashamsa is used for career. A planet that is strong in both D1 and D9 is considered reliably strong.
How accurate is a Kundli without the exact birth time?
Without a birth time the planets’ signs are still mostly right (only the Moon moves fast — about one sign every 2¼ days), but the Lagna and all the houses can be wrong. If you only know an approximate time, say so in your reading and treat house-based predictions with caution. Astrologers can sometimes rectify the time by matching past life events to the chart.
How can you get your Kundli for free?
You can generate a free Kundli in Agastya: enter your date, time and place of birth and it calculates your Lagna, Moon sign, Nakshatra, planetary positions, house details and current Mahadasha using real astronomical positions. You can then ask questions in plain language — in Hindi, English or five other Indian languages — and get answers based on your own chart.
Frequently asked questions
What details are needed to make a Kundli?
You need your date of birth, exact time of birth and place of birth. The time and place decide your Lagna (ascendant) and houses, so the more accurate they are, the more accurate the Kundli.
Which house in the Kundli is for career?
The 10th house is the main house of career, status and reputation. Astrologers also look at the 6th house (daily work and service), the 2nd and 11th houses (income) and the planet that rules the 10th house.
Which house in the Kundli is for marriage?
The 7th house is the house of marriage and the spouse. Venus (for everyone) and Jupiter (traditionally for women) are also checked, along with the D9 Navamsa chart.
Is Janam Kundali the same as a horoscope?
Yes. Janam Kundali, Janampatri, birth chart and natal horoscope all mean the same thing: a chart of the planets at your moment of birth. Daily horoscopes in newspapers are a much simpler forecast based only on your Moon or Sun sign.
Can I read my own Kundli?
Yes. Start with your Lagna, Moon sign and the houses linked to your question, then check your current Mahadasha. For a deeper reading you can ask an astrologer or an AI astrologer like Agastya that works from your exact chart.
